Smile education for inmates

If anyone has info on education from IU in the state of Indiana I would like for you to please pass it along to me. My husband is trying to finish school so he can get a time cut and be home this time next year. But everything I have looked at has turned up a dead end for us. Thanks!

Well I have a little bit about my dealings with the incarceration of loved one's in The Prison System Under Introduce Yourself.... ~I am TexasDust~

But One day I came by as every one else noticed the link to the forum and could not get in, waited a day or two tried still a no go. Then On The Third day or fourth I wrote a letter to my son clicked on the link to the forum and To My Amazement I Got In!

The rest is history, I Love People and Have A Heart For The Broken Hearted....

God Has been good to me Through All The Hardships I have Endured, and He has enabled me To Be Strong For Others Regardless of What I am Dealing With In My Own Life!

When I seen this forum and it was open and more or less empty but a few post, right away My main concern was for The People Here and For The Ones That would Come Here, That Had No Answers and The New People Who Never Experinced Going Through This, I Have gone through alot with The System and know how hard it is to find answers or to figure out The Way The System Is Run, Visits, Phone Calls, Money, Mail Etc.

I Thought about How and What could I do To help out and make a difference where People would have a place for answers if there was no one here to ask or help, So I Put In all the Links to The Fifty States Home Pages and placed a few opening post in some of the other forums sites here to get people going, I opened up with my intro which made most feel comfortable enough to start leaving their stories and after awile I realized people started coming here with questions about the Jpay Services which I knew nothing about! I learned fast and alot of members here helped me with answers so I could learn what they knew about the services they used which some facilities have different services, none of them have all the same services, and some have new services, that are just that, New. So I started posting about the services and how they work. (JPay Does Not Help Me With This Stuff) The Members Here Do! Which In Turn Lets Me Help Others...

After that people started asking questions to answers that were in The Department of Corrections Home Pages, Not To Be Mean But Some Wanted The Information Handed To Them! No Problem that is when I started Pulling All Or Most of The Important Links Out Of The Home Pages, So the answers for them were a click away.
New Members ask questions right away without loooking at the board I do not mind I am here to help as I can...

Was told they wanted to make me a Moderator at The 1000 Member Mark and I said Yes But was unsure of what it entailed but I went for it when it was Time!

Now All I have to say is, You Know How Some People Wonder what Kind Of Mark they will leave in this world when they die, well I believe this is one of them for me! (I Just Hope They See Jesus's Foot Prints Here Instead of Mine!)

I Still have 20 States left to pull links out of and the Pen Pal Post under Met In Prison needs to have the links pulled out of the DOC Home Pages not all of the states have them only 5 or 7 states have them so there is something that needs to be done.

But again I have done all this For The Love Of The People, That I Have For Them & Their Loved One's That Are Incarcerated! I Call It "A LABOR OF LOVE"

Thanks for asking and being Interested!

Anything that you feel you can do to help out is welcome and that goes for the rest of The Members! We are ALL here for the same reasons.....

I Am Healty And Not Going Anywhere No Time Soon, God Willing!

"But The Tears that should be flowing from my eyes are flowing from my heart and they were slowly drownding me!"

This Is my outlet.... "My Boat Is Floating In The River of Tears"

IU offers correspondence courses for inmates. They will be via snail mail. At the end of the course the final will be administered by someone at the prison. Suggest they ask their advisor or counsler if they need permission in advance to enrollment. You can contact IU directly and they will help you set it up.

The Student Guide

Financial Aid from the U.S. Department of Education

The Student Guide is a comprehensive resource on student financial aid from the U.S. Department of Education. Grants, loans, and work-study are the three major forms of aid available through the Department's Federal Student Aid office. Updated each award year, The Student Guide tells you about the programs and how to apply for them.

The Student Guide 2003-2004 available in English Spanish
is for the July 1, 2003 - June 30, 2004 award year.

To apply for federal aid and to apply for many state student aid programs, students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid [url=http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/](FAFSA) [/URL. Electronic versions of the FAFSA make applying for financial aid faster and easier than ever.

If you have any questions you may contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center.

Drug offenders who lie on the financial-aid form usually qualify for aid because neither the government nor universities seek to verify responses. "The Al Capone of drug dealers could answer no, and there are no checks," says David Allen, financial-aid director at Bristol Community College in Fall River, Mass. Ms. Kozberg, the Education Department spokeswoman, says the goverment checks answers to all questions on a sample of applications but doesn't pay special attention to the drug responses.

Here's the rest of it . This is not my work, I merely borrowed it to pass on.

Below I am going to post contact info for Colleges & Universities that offer correspondence courses and certificate programs to inmates and others.

But FIRST here are some tips to getting started -- based on my experience:

#1. GED ---

ASSUME your loved one MUST get their GED before taking any correspondence courses -- GED prep classes are one thing that most prisons actually do offer. Your loved one should get their GED before anything else.

#2. THERE MAY BE PROGRAMS AVAILABLE THROUGH THE PRISON --- CHECK IT OUT ---

DO NOT ASSUME there is no higher education program at the prison. There are not many, but there are some. Have your loved one contact his case worker, or Education Director, (if one exists at his facility) -- to see what is available.

Note: There are usually qualifications an inmate must meet to get access to classes beyond a GED. For Example: They must be a young or youthful offender, under 25 -- or they must have a minimum amount of years left to serve. Qualifications are different in different states, so check with your dept of corrections in your state.

NOTE -- some prisons within the same state have educational programs in one prison that are not available in another. If there are Educational opportunities at one prison in your state -- but not at the one your loved one is at -- he or she may qualify for a transfer. (usually can only do this after a certain amount of time is already served). Have your loved one ask about opportunities for education at other prisons that they may not have been placed at - but could transfer to.

If the prison/state offers nothing for your loved one -- (most likely), then you can consider enrolling in correspondence course, as we are ---

#3. COST --

This can be the most prohibitive issue with inmates getting an education on the inside. Most Educational programs within the system are free if the inmate is eligible to participate. However, correspondence courses cost money.

In limited cases your loved one may still qualify for a pell grant, or federal student loan, (regardless of credit history). But with current laws -- most FELONS are barred from access to Educational loans and grants, which makes no sense at all in terms of rehabilitation.

You can ask the Financial Advisor at the University of your choice to determine if your loved one is eligible for any student loans or grants. They may tell him to apply and see what happens -- it is important that your loved one is honest about their charges and incarceration if they choose to apply for loans or grants.

Last thing on cost --- some of these courses are expensive -- If it is a priority then find a way.

We can only afford for my son to do one class a year -- but in the end that will be 13 more classes than he had before he went in. We are swinging the cost -- because several family members are chipping in.
***I would love to start prison scholarship program -- it is MUCH needed!!!***

#4. QUESTIONS TO ASK THE COLLEGE or UNIVERSITY--

- Does the tuition cost include books and postage?
- Does the inmate have to have access to a computer?
(some do, some don't).
- Does the inmate have to have a counselor or teacher on site to administer tests in order to get credit?

****** BEFORE YOU PAY ANY MONEY TO THE UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE --- MAKE SURE THE PRISON SIGNS OFF AND ALLOWS THE INMATE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM THAT HE OR SHE IS SIGNING UP FOR!!!********

Only you and your loved one will help put themselves in a position to make something of their lives when they get out --- the system won't.
