    Montana Women's Prison in Billings houses approximately 265 adult female offenders and has partial responsibility for 245 more. More than 90 percent of inmates at MWP are involved in educational or vocational programs and nearly all participate in a parenting program, staffed by volunteers, where they learn prenatal skills, infant care, adolescent behavior and more. The volunteers also assist and lend support at the hospital when inmates give birth.
    Montana Women's Prison maintains a staff of close to 90 people including contract personnel.
    Security: supervises inmates and assures the overall security of the facility.
    Medical Services provides and coordinates comprehensive health care for the inmates.
    Clinical Services provides mental health services, a wellness program, and family support services.
    A Deputy Warden oversees activities, education, food service, case managers, mother and child activities, and maintenance.

    Exclamation Women's Prison Visiting Policy

    Visitor Policy
    Each institution sets visiting hours and policies, which are subject to change. Visiting is considered a privilege for the offender and can be revoked. Visitors must be approved for visitation prior to their arrival. At Montana State Prison, for example, an advance notice of three days and a background check is required. For details on visiting, contact the facility at the phone number provided below.

    Non-contact visits usually allow the visitor and inmate to view each other through a window.

    Contact during contact visits is limited to handholding and a brief hug or embrace, at the beginning and at the end of the visit.

    Cascade County Regional Prison - General visiting hours are 8 to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday. Contact visits for state inmates are Saturday and Sunday between 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Contact visits must be scheduled and approved two weeks in advance. An inmate must have 30 days clear conduct to be eligible for contact visits.

    Crossroads Correctional Center in Shelby - Visiting hours are 8 am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Advance notice is required for visits.

    Dawson County Correctional Facility - General visiting hours are from 9:30 am - 11:30 am and from 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm Tuesdays and Fridays. Contact visits are available from 9:30 am - 11:30 am and 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Contact visits are subject to offender clear conduct and prior guest approval.

    Missoula Assessment and Sanctions Center - Visiting sessions for state offenders are scheduled by housing unit Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday starting at 8:30 am and ending at 4:45 pm. An offender with clear contact is allowed three visits per week. Visits are 30 minutes in length and are not scheduled during the lunch hour. Visitors must schedule 24 hours in advance. Offenders in the MASC sanction and diversion program are not allowed visits.

    Montana State Prison - Visiting are scheduled five days a week, Wednesday through Sunday. Established visiting hours are 2 pm to 8:30 pm, depending on the inmate's housing location.

    Pine Hills Youth Correctional Facility Visits are encouraged and allowed, with authorization. The youth’s caseworker will be able to provide suggestions regarding the most convenient times for you to visit. Visiting hours are 9am to 9pm on Monday through Friday and 9am to 7pm on weekends. However, an attempt is made limit visitation to times when youth are not involved in campus programming. The most convenient times for visits to avoid disruption of programming are 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekends. Youth are not permitted to visit off grounds until they have earned Level Three of the Earned Incentive Program and have also received their caseworker's and treatment team’s permission to do so.

    When visiting all visitors sixteen years of age and older must present a picture ID and are subject to search. All items carried into the facility (i.e. bags, sacks, purses, boxes, etc.) will be searched. Personal items such as cell phones, keys, cameras, lighters, knives, etc. are not allowed inside the facility. Such items may either be left in a locked vehicle or stored in the business office. All tobacco products are prohibited and must be left in a locked vehicle during the visit.

    Montan Women's Prison Communications Plan
    1. Management team meets weekly whenever possible. Minutes will be published for staff with exception of confidential information.

    2. Operations will meet on a bi-weekly basis. Operations manager meets with each department head individually weekly.

    3. Management meets with offender representatives (Resident Advisory Council) once a month to disscuss issues and review spending requests.

    Meetings are attended by management team members, and inmate services, food services, and budget personnel.
    Meetings are recorded and the minutes are published for offenders and staff.
    4. The interdepartmental team meets every other Wednesday and includes staff from all areas of the prison: chemical dependency, Intensive Challenge Program, education, chaplain, parenting, medical, mental health, financial and records management, inmate services and security. program. Team members meet on the opposite Wednesdays to discuss treatment needs and issues with offenders. These meetings are recorded and the minutes are published, excepting the confidential information.

    5. Lieutenants meeting - deputy warden, security/operations and lieutenants meet every other Tuesday and Thursday. Minutes are posted; lieutenants brief correctional officers. Memoranda are generated to address policy or special program needs. Lieutenants are then required to pass information from the meetings to correctional officers during shift brief.

    6. Warden and deputy wardens tour the building and meet with department heads weekly. The duty officer comes in for evening shift change and meets with evening shift lieutenants or calls in.

    7. All-hands meetings will be conducted every quarter with recommended attendance by all correctional staff. A short question-and-answer session is included.

    8. Incident reports are completed, distributed electronically and are available to all staff electronically. Management team members and department heads receive copies of all the reports.

    9. Lieutenants conduct short briefings prior to the start of each shift. Specialized Lieutenants meet with staff monthly to discuss training, visitation and inmate services. Intensive Challenge Program staff meets on Wednesday to discuss offender progress notes, make recommendations for phase-ups in the threaputic community, and discuss progress of offenders and counseling strategies.

    10. When a task force is created to address a particular project (such as developing the theraputic community), an electronic bulletin board is created for suggestions and questions and answers. Task force minutes are published.

    11. The theraputic community team meets with senior coordinators from all housing units to discuss program changes, problems and ideas. Each housing unit has a team that meets weekly to review room change requests, conduct level 4 peer-and staff Interventions, and phase reviews. Results of these meetings are posted in the facility log notes.

    12. E-mail also is used extensively to reach both day and night shifts and send out facility-wide information. All staff members have state computer network access.

    13. The warden interacts with management team members daily via personal communication or e-mail. Regular individual meetings will be scheduled to addresspersonnel issues, progress towards goals, supervision issues, and to solicit information and suggestions to assist team members in fulfilling their job responsibilities.

    14. A weekly newsletter to all MWP staff is published and includes minutes of MWP meetings that impact staff members' performance of their duties.
