    Question Setting up phones

I'm trying to get an understanding on the phone situation. In Indiana we have to use Securus (old CBS) right? Then what does using a prepaid cell phone with the area code of the facility do?

Both of my grandsons are in the 812 area code - one is in Branchville the other is in Wabash Valley and I'm in Indy - area code 317. Can anybody tell me if there is any type of savings to getting a phone from the drugstore or someplace like that. I already have a regular cell phone plan through AT&T - what is the advantage/disadvantage to setting up a plan to use them? And if there is an advantage, what do I need to do.

It doesnt charge you long distance but both of your grandsons have to have the number so it can put on their phone list and it can take up to 90 days to get the number approved. You can also have att add a line to your account with those area codes and an extra line on att is only ten extra a month but then you have to sign a new two year contract with them and the prepaid cells can run just as much as paying the long distance charges if you talk a lot cause the calls are anywhere to 15mins to 30mins depending on where they are at.

I have tried different things. I went and got a prepaid cell phone at Sam's club and told them the area code and prefix I wanted to be in, at the time he was in jail so we had to use globel tel svc-- I paid the fee to use them which was $25,$50 whatever you want and then I had to pay and put minutes on the prepaid phone---I felt like that was costing me more money. Then I ran across a site cheapinmatecalls.com I told them the jail and the area code they gave me a number it cost $59.99 one time fee for the year.
I gave the number to my son and it got approved and now when he calls that number it is forwarded to my cell phone (cheap inmate.com does that) and I am getting a half hour call for $2.95! The catch is when you set up your acct with CBS be sure to do it though the automated part, if you do it with an actually person they will not let you get the local call rate because your billing address is in a different area code, I learned that the hard way to. So go to the site, you can email them or call and tell them the prison(s) number so they can be sure its a local call they are a little slow in getting back but usually within a couple of days.

I am not sure the reason for your cut offs but mine would happen when someone would beep in on our call (call waiting) so I have deactivated it for now. Also on the question about no calls (812) living in 502- I found out from my son that my landline and cell phone is collect call restriced, so he couldn't get through- I went to the phone (at&t) store to ask them to remove that from my cell--no can do--------said only way is how I ended up doing it with the 3rd party company (cheapinmatecalls.com) they gave me to local number and then they forward it to my cell and the call goes through.
You need to find out if collect call restriction is on your line because that is how the calls come through (as collect).
