    How do I write to an inmate?

    Alabama inmates may receive correspondence through the U.S. mail. Inmates are allowed to correspond by letter with family members and friends unless the mail privilege is withdrawn as a result of approved disciplinary action. Mail between inmates, whether state, county, city, out-of-state or federal, may be allowed only with the permission of the facility wardens. All incoming mail must be addressed so as to specify the inmate’s name, inmate number, and location within the institution. Additional items included in correspondence may be cause for mail rejection. Items such as food, clothing, jewelry, and toiletries may not be mailed to offenders. Individuals may not mail packages to offenders. ADOC policy strictly prohibits inmates from E-mail and Internet accesses. Please refer to Administrative Regulation 448, Inmate Mail.

    Do Alabama prisons offer cable television?

    No. With the exception of some on death row, inmates do not have televisions in their cells. However, televisions are available in dayrooms, where inmates may view one set. Seating is typically bench style with only basic networks, sports and educational channels permitted for view. Televisions are donated by faith-based groups or purchased through Institutional Contingency funds. ICF Funds are generated through the sale of items on the inmate canteen (in-prison stores where snack foods, toiletries and approved prison items are sold).
